Have you ever been on a dive holiday and envied the instructors their wonderful job? It’s like you are on holiday every day. A warm climate, a new culture, happy people around you, glamorous, fun, friendship, and a lifestyle that everyone back home will envy…. Let work be an adventure and become a PADI Professional, and you could do things that others only dream of. Whether you work in a local dive centre at a resort, or on a live aboard dive boat, the adventure could be yours.
If you chose to work at a local dive centre, you can teach people how to dive and regularly guide trips to exotic dive destinations. You can encourage others to become as passionate as you are about diving and enrich their own lives by experiencing the adventure of diving.
By undertaking an Instructor Development Course
An IDC is a professional qualification to become an Open Water Instructor, and is designed for those wanting to make a career out of diving. It will prepare candidates for the “Real World” of diving, and will also familiarise you with PADI standards and procedures.
The training usually starts with a 3 day Preparation Course and allows the candidate to practice in an informal relaxed environment the theory and practical skills required for the IDC. It gives each student the chance to improve his or her water skills to the standard required (even full time Dive masters need to ensure they are performing the skills to PADI standards). It also covers the theory, which is required for the 5 exams, and an introduction to teaching in the classroom.
Note: This course is not a prerequisite for the IDC, but previous students on our IDCs have benefited greatly by participating in the Preparation Course.
The IDC course itself lasts 9 days and during it, you will learn how to teach the full range of PADI courses. A 2-day Instructor Exam, administered by PADI examiners, immediately follows this course. After successfully completing this, you will have achieved the Instructor rating.
Note: It is expected of all candidates that they have sufficient knowledge of diving theory prior to the IDC. There are no formal theory presentations during the course
Following the IDC Course, the final part is the 2 days Instructor Examination (IE) which is conducted by an independent examiner from PADI Headquarters.
Prerequisites: IDC or IOC certificate of completion. Been certified as a diver for at least 12 months and have at least 100 logged dives.
Each candidate is tested on their ability to teach in the classroom, the confined water and the open water. Skills are also tested by means of a Rescue evaluation, an 800yrd (738 M) swim using mask, snorkel and fins, and a demonstration of 3 skills. Theory knowledge is assessed by the completion of 5 written exams in Physics, Physiology, Equipment, General skills and Environment, and the Recreational Dive Planner. Knowledge of the PADI system is tested by an 'open book' exam on PADI General Standards and Procedures.
Courses run throughout 2003, in April, July, September and December from the Oonasclub in Sharm el Sheikh. The Oonasclub in Sharm is a PADI 5 Star IDC Centre, acknowledged by PADI for its professionalism and for providing high standards of diver education.
In addition to the course costs (see below), accommodation at the Oonasclub on a b&b basis, sharing a twin room is £…. Or £… for a single room. Most candidates opt for a one-way flight to Sharm and then contact us in Sharm to book their return flight when they are ready, in case they decide to extend their tour.
A Medic First Aid Instructor’s Course is available, and Speciality Instructor courses are also available after each IDC.
For all Instructor courses we require a deposit of £400 to ensure enrolment.
