Manta Lodge is nestled on the edge of the mountain rain forest, located at the north-eastern corner of the island in the sleepy fishing village of Speyside. With just 22 en-suite rooms, the hotel is small and personal. Facilities include a restaurant and bar, freshwater pool and beach.
Tobago Dive Experience is Manta Lodge's in-house dive operation. Conveniently located opposite the beach in Speyside, they offer 3 dives daily, diving instruction, and dive equipment hire. Most dive sites are located within a five to twenty minute boat trip. Many dives can be drift dives, better suited to the experienced diver.
A modest 29oC during the day throughout the year, is due to the islands positioning on the equator. The driest months are between December and June. Occasional strong winds do brush the island. However, Tobago is well positioned outside the hurricane belt, and is a year round diving destination.
The sheltered nature of the reefs in Speyside create a lush and plentiful selection of dive sites. With very little commercial facilities, and because of the lack of construction, the inshore reefs boast some of the best diving in the whole of the Caribbean. To top it all, the shallow waters off Speyside are a host to the world's largest brain coral, measuring 16ft wide and 12ft high!
You can witness magnificent coral gardens harbouring a wealth of marine life such as turtles and eels, stingrays, eagle rays and even manta rays. Japanese Gardens is spectacular, especially if the current is flowing, causing the soft corals to sway to and fro bringing the entire seascape to life. Nurse sharks are frequently found sleeping on the sandy bottom, and occasionally bigger creatures can be found even on the local sites.

Tobago is a year round diving destination
The key area for diving in Tobago is in this North East side of the island in Speyside, as the reefs here are in lush condition, with plenty of shelter, there are some 40 dives based just here. There are very little commercial facilities, and because of the lack of construction here, the inshore reefs boast some of the best diving in the whole of the Caribbean.
Diving starts at 8:30 every morning, with scheduled departures at 9:00am, 11:30pm, and 2:00pm, with the boats leaving from Speyside jetty which is only a 5 minute drive from the hotel. Most dive sites are located within a 5 to 20 minute boat trip. There are a large number of beautiful reefs in Tobago, located in and around Goat Island and Little Tobago.
Tobago is surrounded by some of the richest and most colourful coral reefs in the Caribbean with 40 species of corals and over 600 species of fish.
Common sea life include an abundance of Turtles, Lobster, Nurse Shark, Reef Shark, Moray's, Stingray's, Eagle Ray's and perhaps Manta Ray's. Many of the dives can be drift dives.

If you fancy exploring the rest of the island you can either hire a Jeep or car to take in some of the most scenic views and beaches or arrange with us to split your tour and try some diving off Pigeon Point Beach below. It only takes an hour and 15 minutes to reach the South side of the island.

Just 5 minutes from your dive embarkation point, The Toucan Inn accommodation gives a nice feel positioned around a pool and amongst the trees.
