Maldives

These pearls of the Indian Ocean stretch 820 km north to south and 120 km east to west and are situated just South West of Sri Lanka, on the equator. The numerous coral reef islands, 1,190 in total, form an archipelago of 26 major atolls. Out of the incredibly large number of islands only 200 islands are inhabited, with 89 islands adapted as exclusive resort islands.

Diving

The Maldives are particularly renowned for the large pelagic fish that visit the area, particularly sharks and rays. Night dives are a must as the reefs become highly active, with predators on the prowl.

The Maldives wet season is between May and August, during this period reduced visibility may restrict the number of accessible dive sites, however a plankton bloom in May attracts whale sharks and manta rays. The hottest air temperatures are from April to June. December to March has the lowest humidity and the clearest water.

Climate

The summer never ends in the Maldives. Although it is warm throughout the year there are slight variations in the temperature during certain periods determined by the monsoons. The Northwest monsoons, from November to April is mostly dry with very little wind, while the Southwest monsoon from May to October brings some rain and wind. Being on the equator, the monsoons are mild and the temperature varies very little.The climate is generally warm and humid. In the Maldives the sun shines all year round with average temperatures of 29c to 32c.

Currency

Officially the currency in the Maldives is the Maldive Rufiyaa, however in most tourist locations, such as the Kuredu Island Resort, US Dollars are accepted.
