Mozambique is situated on the south eastern coast of Africa, there’s over 2,500 km of white, palm-fringed beaches nestling on the Indian Ocean to explore, and her extensive coral reefs host a dazzling array of unique marine life and offers some amazing diving. Her neighbouring countries are Swaziland and South Africa to the southwest, Zimbabwe to the west, Zambia to the northwest and Tanzania to the north.
Having such a large coastline the diversity of marine life can change simply by travelling 150km along the coastline. It is suggested that Mozambique may host the largest population of Manta Rays in the world, with over 900 individuals being identified on one reef set alone (Tofo), here is where you will find Andrea Marshall from the recent BBC documentary “Queen of Manta’s” continuing her long term study of Manta.
Along with the Manta’s, and depending on when you travel and where you stay you will have the opportunity to see Hammerheads, Zambezi’s and reef sharks, Whale Sharks, Humpback Whales, a very healthy population of Turtles and not forgetting our usual reef suspects.
There are many ways to reach Mozambique, and due to her close proximity to South Africa combing a stay with ScubaAddicts for a SharkWeek tour, or a few nights in the famous game reserve of Kruger national park is relatively easy.
Climate
The dry season in Mozambique is winter from April to October, temperatures range from 24c to 27c, the rainy season is summer November to March with temperatures range from 27c to 31c.
Currency
Mozambique’s own currency is the “metical” however this is only obtainable locally and is no use outside of the country, we recommend that you take as low denominations of sterling or South African Rand (ZSAR) as possible and change as you go along at local banks, both ZSAR and sterling are widely accepted in Mozambique but rates of exchange will vary and new clean notes may only be accepted.
