Baby turtles at Sharks Bay
Big turtle just spotted on house reef at Sharks Bay. More baby turtles may be hatched tonight!
Monday 5th September
The staff at Sharks Bay think tonight or in the early hours there maybe some more baby turtles hatched! We will keep you updated with any further news!
Thursday 25th August The National Park visited Sharks Bay this morning and opened the previous nest area where they found some more eggs which if all goes well should hatch in 7 / 10 days time. It is difficult to say for sure because the temperature of the sand stimulates the hatching; as everyone knows we have a very hot climate here so the turtles here in Sharks Bay can come early and their incubation period can be shorter. Generally hatching occurs either early in the morning or overnight.
Our beach is still open but the nest area is closed off and will be until such time as the turtles hatch which should take at least three or four weeks. The area will be closely monitored by our beach and dive centre staff.
If the turtles hatch when we can see them then the National Park will take them to a special area in Ras Mohammed where they can protect them until they are strong enough to be released. Because the Hawksbill is an endangered species the National Park are working towards increasing the population of the area.
There is one beach in Ras Mohammed which is already closed off to protect the turtles as it is a known nesting area. The only other well known nesting area is a beach on Tiran where hatching was witnessed on the 4th July (again by Auntie Alex and friends!!).
