Though the smallest of the Canary Islands, El Hierro offers an extraordinary and different landscape that will captivate you. You can view the most breathtaking underwater scenery too, with crystal-clear waters in an incredible volcanic setting together with hundreds of subtropical species.
The currents that fringe the outer edge of the archipelago bring warmer waters to El Hierro than to the other islands, and the sea temperatures range from 21-24°C all year round. These warm currents promote greater growth underwater and are home to temperate and tropical sea life alike.
The variety and abundance of fish is quite remarkable. The sea has a very deep blue hue, and visibility is generally 30m or more. November is the time to go as the sea is around 24°C and the air temperature is a balmy 25-28°C.
Situated in “El Mar de Las Calmas” or the tranquil sea, sheltered as it is by dramatic cliffs from the prevailing North East winds, the Marine Reserve provides an abundance of colourful marine life in a beautiful setting. A divers’ paradise.
On arrival at Tenerife Airport, you will be met and escorted to Hotel Andreas in the centre of Los Cristianos where you will stay overnight. Your guide will join you the following morning for the transfer by fast ferry to the Island of El Hierro. At the island’s southern tip, in the tiny fishing village of La Restinga, you will stay in a lovely seafront apartment. This perfect retreat is barely 3 minutes walk along the front from the dive centre, and just two minutes along the prom to the friendly “El Bar”, the most southerly bar in Europe!
The Hotel Andreas has comfortably furnished rooms with private bathroom, mini-bar, telephone, tea and coffee making facilities and a safe. The El Hierro seafront apartments have either one or two bedrooms with a living area and en-suite bathroom. They each have their own balcony, tea and coffee making facilities and an electric hob.
There are flights available from Gatwick, Manchester and many regional airports to Tenerife South which is just a 3 hour flight away.
You will be met at Tenerife South by Shane and transferred to the Hotel Andreas which is approximately 20 minutes by air conditioned mini bus.
The following morning you will meet with Shane and the rest of group and embark on the fast ferry to El Hierro which takes around 2 hours. The scenic transfer from the ferry port to La Restinga takes approximately 1 hour.
The apartments on both Tenerife and El Hierro have self catering facilities. There are supermarkets and restaurants near by but usually Shane will organise dinner for the group in a different restaurant each evening.
The restaurant's in El Hierro specialise in locally caught fresh fish as well as great steaks and the usual range of Spanish cuisine including lovely paellas, tortillas and salads. The entire island's considerable range of fruit and vegetables are organically produced and full of flavour. The cost of these meals are the responsibility of each diner and not included in the package as is alcohol which is readily available and you will often finish the evening at El Bar.
Should you fancy a change, fully guided hill walks are also available at no additional charge, this is ideal for non-diving friends, family and partners. El Hierro offers some outstanding photo opportunities so make sure your camera is charged before setting off!
Your final day will be spent on Tenerife where you can explore either on foot, or take a scenic drive to visit the National Park; here you can walk or ride a cable car almost to the summit of the spectacular Mount Teide, which at 12,5000ft, is Spain's highest mountain. Alternatively guests can choose to laze on the beach after their week of exercise!
Throughout your stay you will be guided by long term guest and friend of Oonasdivers, Shane Gray. Each weekly tour begins on a Saturday (other departure days may be possible on request), flights are direct to Tenerife which is where your first and last night will be spent in Hotel Andrea's in Los Cristianos.
On Sunday you transfer by fast ferry (2 hours approx) to spend 6 days & 5 nights with 5 days diving (2 dives per day) on the wonderful unspoilt island of El Hierro.
Diving is with the El Submarino dive centre which is Irish owned and run by a welcoming Spanish couple, Fernando and Silvia. It is perfectly placed on the seafront, just 50m from the dive boat moored in the small marina. There are 27 dive sites within 10 minutes of the centre by RIB ride. El Submarino offer a full range of PADI courses including try dives and the Open Water Course up to Divemaster level.
