The combination of stunning walls at Bunaken, pristine reefs at Bangka, and the muck diving mecca that is Lembeh, makes this an experience that no diver would want to miss.
Murex Manado is where the adventure begins. This casual yet classic resort is an award winning PADI 5-start dive centre with a 4m deep purpose-built pool. There are fifteen bungalows, each with either a garden or ocean view, and photographers’ will be in their element in the designated camera room which has personal preparation areas, plug sockets, bright lighting and air conditioning, there is also a flat-screen television for viewing marine life presentations and underwater videography. Bunaken is famous for staggering coral wall dives, and Lekuan 1, 2 and 3 are the most famous amongst them. The huge walls go down to around 40m before sloping out, you will find swarms of pyramid butterfly fish, colourful hard corals, sponges, and soft corals, along with countless green sea turtles and reef sharks. Mando Bay is a mix of black and white sand muck and is home to some of Indonesia’s rarest and most unique critters including mimic octopus, squid, flamboyant cuttlefish, sea horses and numerous crustacean, nudibranch and frogfish species.
Murex Bangka is your next stop, with two wall dives en-route. As you approach Bangka Island you will understand why it is often described as a true Robinson Crusoe style experience with its palm-fringed white sand beach. The resort offers several styles of accommodation including Deluxe Hillside Cottages which have panoramic views over the ocean through the lush green canopy below. The facilities for photographers’ match those of Murex Manado, as does the cuisine which is a tantalizing mix of international and Asian flavours using fresh local ingredients. Bangka’s dive sites explode with colour in a sensory overload where the pristine reefs teem with life. Unique species include resident dugongs, dolphins and pilot whales, several species of pygmy seahorse, blue ring and wonderpus octopus, ghost pipefish, eagle ray and great barracuda. The topography is a mix of rock pinnacles, white sandy bottoms, and sloping reefs. Diving is good year-round with average water temperatures of 28-29°c.
Lembeh Resort is last but by no means least, with the Lembeh Strait often being called ‘The Critter Capital of the World’ you can be sure you are about to experience something very special. You will enjoy two reef dives and stunning scenery en-route before arriving at this secluded location where luxury and elegance comes as standard. The accommodation is contemporary, and the resort has a spa, ocean view pool and tropical gardens. You will dive with the renowned Critters@LembehResort, the only dive centre in the Lembeh Strait to have marine biologists, a photo pro, photography and marine life trained dive guides, camera centre and a spacious designated camera room. Lembeh’s classic muck sites feature gentle slopes of volcanic sand scattered with bits of debris, sponge, algae, or rubble, and highlights include 8 different species of frogfish, 12 species of octopus, numerous crustacean species that cannot be found anywhere else on earth, and countless nudibranch species. Some of Lembeh’s most iconic species include hairy frogfish, mandarin fish, flamboyant cuttlefish, blue ring octopus and Banggai cardinalfish.
