This destination has a wonderful mix of daily boat diving, shore diving and liveaboard options. There really is something for all divers with its intriguing wrecks, impressive walls, and pristine reefs. With around 30 dive sites to explore by day boat alone there is more than enough to keep divers busy, and in addition Ras Mohamed National Park offers some exciting drift dives. Add to this the world-famous SS Thistlegorm and the Straits of Tiran and this destination surely earns a place on every diver’s bucket list.

There are several excellent Dive Clubs close by. Oonas Dive Club has a wonderful house reef and also offers daily boat diving from their large day cruisers, the boats have spacious sun decks, saloon area, galley, toilets, and purpose designed dive decks. The daily itinerary alternates between a wide variety of sites in the Ras Mohammed National Park, the Straits of Tiran, and other local sites up and down the South Sinai coast. They keep groups on their boat small which creates a more intimate and friendly environment between guides, divers, and the crew. Dive guides make every attempt to avoid large numbers of boats and divers to ensure their guests enjoy a more relaxed dive with a better chance of an encounter with larger marine life.

A typical boat diving day starts between 8am and 9 am. The first dive is made in the morning, a buffet lunch is then served followed by a further dive in the afternoon. The boat generally returns at around 4pm for a spot of ‘après dive’ back at the Dive Centre. Snorkelers and non-divers are always made welcome onboard, there is plenty of space to relax, sunbathe and watch the amazing scenery of the South Sinai pass by. The dive guides are happy to make suggestions for the best snorkelling experience on the wonderful coral gardens and shallow reef plates which surround most of the dive sites. Snorkelling equipment can be rented from the dive centre if required.

Emperor Divers is a British managed dive company that has been operating for nearly 30 years and offer boat diving packages for as many diving days as the guest requires, with a 5+ day package is the best value for money. The package includes 2 dives per day with a guide, tanks, weights, and a weight belt. Unlimited unguided shore diving does not include a guide and can be booked and paid for locally.

Special trips including a full day at SS Thistlegorm or Dunraven can be booked and paid for locally, along with extras such as nights dives, additional daily dives, and lunch on the boat. Both dive centres also offer an excellent choice of PADI courses, children can start their underwater adventures with the Bubblemaker course, and beginners can do the Open Water and then move on to the Advanced Open Water if time allows. For those wanting to expand their skills one of the Specialty courses may suit, these include Enriched Air Nitrox, Deep and Drift.

Being in the southern part of Sinai the climate is subtropical desert, with very mild winters and hot summers. Sharm El Sheikh is an all-year round diving destination, the summer months of May through to September can be quite hot so some travellers prefer to visit in April, October and November as the sea is still warm and the days long and sunny. Rainfall is rare, and even in the winter the sky is usually clear.

Visibility is great all year, it varies from 20m to 60m dependant on the site and the weather. In the summer months divers can hope to see whitetip sharks, hammerheads and possibly manta ray at the reefs of Tiran and Ras Mohamed, along with beautiful soft corals, scorpionfish, lionfish, barracudas, large schools of jacks, glass fish, snappers, and other types of sharks to name but a few.

Average temperatures in Summer (May-November):
Air 26-33c / Sea 24-28c

Average temperatures in Winter (December-April):
Air 18-23c / Sea 22-25c
